Get clear before you ask for help
I asked an entrepreneur in a class recently what he needed to get his day care business idea off the ground. He responded, "an investor." Not surprising, no one in the class had any "investor" names to give him. I told him to make that request specific and keyword rich to engage the brain to come up with useful results. After a few minutes, he made his request like this: "I need to connect with a person in the eastern area of town that owns a successful business or two -- perhaps something that would feed into or off of a day care center. He or she would live in a well-established neighborhood and be somewhat active or visible in business circles." Almost immediately, five or six hands shot up. Oddly, one person recommended a source for funds available to entrepreneurs that previously had not been thought of. When we make general requests, we are putting the work on others to come up with what we really want. Nobody has time to put that much effort into a response no matter how helpful they wish to be, so you are not as likely to get what you really need. If it is important enough for you to ask for help -either finding a job, securing a particular service provider, or finding business help, then it is important enough for you to know exactly what you are asking for. Make your requests specific.

Contributor's Note
A lot of Community Colleges have Small Business Centers that offer great resources for entrepreneurs and small business owners. From free classes to connections to potential collaborators, funding sources, and government procurement sites, it's a good first stop for entrepreneurs and small business owners.
